The modern form of the company has its roots in the La Crosse Mutual Aid Association, created in the 1890s in Wisconsin to provide disability insurance. Through a series of mergers and acquisitions, the company later transformed into the Time Insurance Company. In the late 1970s, the Dutch conglomerate, N.V. AMEV, acquired Time Insurance and embarked on a series of acquisitions, expanding its footprint in the U.S. insurance landscape. This journey culminated in the early 1990s when AMEV combined with VSB Groep NV, with Fortis emerging as the result Subsequently, the U.S. arm, AMEV Holdings, took on the Fortis name. In a strategic shift in 2004, Fortis' American operations were rebranded as Assurant and became an independent entity. In 2015, it announced its exit from the health insurance market to concentrate on housing and lifestyle protection products, selling parts of its health and employee benefits businesses while refining its core offerings.

Assurant's Global Housing division provides solutions centered on housing protection and security.
